Tim Southee is hoping that there might be a little life in what is still a green-tinged pitch. Although to be fair, he doesn’t sound overly certain: “One of those ones I don’t think it’s bad either way.” NZ have two debutants in their attack, Blair Tickner and Scott Kuggeleijn, with Southee and Neil Wagner bringing the heavyweight Test match experience.
Ben Stokes, meanwhile, was happy not to have to make a call. “I didn’t really know what I was going to do, so I would have said the first thing that came into my head,” he says. Asked by Mark Richardson if England will be coming out to whack it, he adds he has “all the confidence in the lads to go out there and try to put on a show.”
