England vs Bangladesh World Cup Highlights – 10th Oct 2023

Pitch and weather: The weather is cooler than it had been in Ahmedabad, although not significantly. A fresh pitch has been prepared for this second fixture, two strips across from the surface that proved tough for run-scoring in the Afghanistan vs Bangladesh game, and seam bowlers have previously thrived here, from Tim Bresnan in 2013 to Suranga Lakmal four years later. It’s the outfield, however, that has been the focus of the pre-match build-up, with the sand-based surface causing Mujeeb Ur Rahman to jar his knee awkwardly while sliding to intercept a Shakib boundary. The heavy nature of the surface could reduce the reward for ground strokes too.

Shakib Al Hasan: Little cooler than the other day. We have one change. Hope the fast bowlers can put in a good show. [On Mehidy] His batting has improved, he is one of the leaders at the moment in the team. We have to be at our best to get a result.
Jos Buttler: We were looking to field as well. One change for us. Reece Topley in for Mooen Ali. Looking to put in a good performance. We are expecting to bounce back. [Outfield] Got to be a little bit smart. Want to block it out and focus on the skill.

Toss: Bangladesh chose to field.

Post Match Presentation

Shakib Al Hasan:

Was a good toss to win, was colder weather then. There was some rain last night. We did not start well, first ten overs especially. When you give them a sniff they always come hard at us. We came back strongly. But it was a little too late. When you lose four early wickets in ten overs, you are not going to get 350. We had a very good plan, but we couldn’t execute it. We were here and there. First five six overs the ball l was swinging nicely. That’s when the momentum went to the England side. We restricted them. Here 320-330 you fancy your chances which we couldn’t get. Long tournament. We have to move on and we have some tough matches coming up. We cannot be bogged down. We have to move on and think about all the positives we have been doing.

Jos Buttler:

Really good performance, we stuck to our guns. There are areas to improve as well. Back end of the innings, we should have got a bit more. It went harder as it went on. That is one area we can improve. Bairstow, Malan and Root were brilliant. Always trying to look for that perfect performance. It might just be the other way around. It can be one of the challenges, reading the pitch, reading the conditions. We have to go with different balance of swing and seam. The early wickets in the powerplay were fantastic.

Dawid Malan is the Player of the Match:

[What’s clicking for him] No idea. Experience if anything. It is nice to contribute. Been a long journey to get to this stage. To get in here is fantastic and to put in a performance and win a game is great. [Struggles against spin] I think sometimes people create a narrative that isn’t there to justify their own writing or views. Sometimes I play a good shot, sometimes I play a bad host. We don’t have to second guess ourselves. I am not here to prove a point or prove to people.
