Tamim Iqbal: “I was a bit disappointed with the way we started with the ball. There was a bit of help for the spinners, and I was disappointed with the way we bowled the first four-five overs. We missed a run-out which was important. Roy and Buttler batted exceptionally well. When you lose, you can point fingers. I’m not going to do that. We didn’t do well as a team, and that’s why we lost. [Shakib partnership] When you lose three wickets in the first three overs it becomes difficult. We took a bit of time but when you’re chasing 326 sometime you have to go. The intent Shakib showed was good, we took our time but it didn’t work out today. [Third ODI] We would like to finish on a high, disappointing to lose but credit goes to England.”
Jos Buttler: “Fantastic series win, Bangladesh are a formidable team at home so we’re delighted to get the win. Spoke about areas to improve from the last match and we really did that. Jason Roy did fantastically well with the bat, the guys chipped in around him and then we made a fantastic start with the ball. As spoken before that these conditions we find the hardest as a team, so to play like we did today was a massive achievement. Our standards were much higher than in the first game. [Chattogram] Talked about adapting to conditions and playing in a variety of ways. We’ll assess the conditions and play accordingly, there are lots of guys putting their hands up and putting up performances, which is fantastic.”
Jason Roy is Player of the Match: “Spent a lot of time playing a lot of cricket in the subcontinent. Today I had to dig deep into those skills and put on a few. [Slower start?] Needed to give me an opportunity today. In the first game, a bit of a rush of blood, played a poor shot against the spin today I wanted to make sure I batted time and gave myself the chance to score runs. [Partnership with Buttler] Unbelievable, with Jos coming in we rotated the strike really well. Moeen Ali and Sam Curran, too, those three guys scoring as freely as they scored was incredible.”
England vs Bangladesh Highlights today, Friday 3-3-2023. 2nd ODI (D/N), England tour of Bangladesh, Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur.
Pitch and weather: Dew could prompt the team winning the toss to bowl first. It won’t be the worst decision in Dhaka as the ball will still have a bit of variable bounce with turn, in the daytime. The weather remains dry, but it is getting warm.
Tamim reckons the pitch looks “a bit soft compared to the first game, a bit tacky.” Bangladesh are unchanged from the first match. “We’ve had a long chat as a team about what we need to do, the main thing is to execute,” Tamim adds. England have made two changes, with Sam Curran and Saqib Mahmood coming in for Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer – Mahmood is making his England return after a back stress fracture suffered at the start of last summer. Buttler says England wanted to bat, so he’s happy to post a score this time around. “Dawid played outstanding innings and carried the batting [in the first ODI]. It’s good to win games where you don’t play your best, so areas to improve on today.”
