Jadeja says: “We don’t know if the dew might come or not in the second half, but we’re hoping it will come.”
Three changes for PBKS. Sandeep Sharma, Rishi Dhawan, and Bhanuka Rajapaksa in place of Shahrukh Khan, Nathan Ellis, and Vaibhav Arora. Both Rajapaksa and Bairstow are in, which I think is an excellent decision.
Mayank Agarwal: “I don’t really have a choice. I’ve lost six out of seven [tosses].” He takes some positives out of it, though, since this is a used pitch and that it will be 60 overs-old by the time PBKS will bowl on it tonight.
CSK are unchanged.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa: “It’s a kind of a slow wicket. We were planning on 150, we were fortunate to get . It’s holding a bit, but if you bat for a while you can identify the pace of it. An amazing knock from Shikhar to get us up to 180-plus. [Why he was sent in at No. 3] There were two left-arm spinners and my team-mate Maheesh Theekshana.”
Jadeja: “I think we started very well, with the new ball we bowled in good areas, but I thought we gave away 10-15 runs in the last 2-3 overs and we didn’t execute our plan very well. I think [Rayudu] was batting brilliantly, but as I said we could have restricted them under 170-175. [On the chase] I think not getting a good start in the first six, we’re not putting runs on the board in the first six. So we need to improve on that and come back strong.”
Chennai Super Kings vs Punjab Kings Highlights today, Monday 25-4-2022. 38th Match (N), Tata Indian Premier League from Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Toss: CSK won and decided to bowl first.
Chennai Super Kings team: 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 2 Robin Uthappa, 3 Mitchell Santner, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 Shivam Dube, 6 Ravindra Jadeja (capt), 7 MS Dhoni (wk), 8 Dwayne Bravo, 9 Dwaine Pretorius, 10 Mukesh Choudhary, 11 Maheesh Theekshana.
Punjab Kings team: 1 Mayank Agarwal (capt), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Jonny Bairstow, 4 Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 7 Rishi Dhawan, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Rahul Chahar, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Sandeep Sharma.
Kagiso Rabada: “In the Powerplay, we were a bit behind the rate, but I must commend Shikhar and Mayank for the way they held their nerve, and then the way Shikhar and Bhanu played was just unbelievable. They set the platform for our batters to come in and play freely and then Liam Livingstone came in and hit a few gentle strokes out of the park and that set us up nicely. We got ourselves a winning total and I thought each and every individual in our bowling attack put their hand up. I think Arsh has been the best death bowler in this comp. That’s what the stats say. He’s a youngster coming in. He’s got a lot of drive, a lot of ambition and he’s got talent as well.
And he’s just a good bloke. So it’s nice to have him around. I’ve always bowled at the death as well so I know I’m going to bowl at the death but Arsh has just been magnificent and been leading the way in that discipline. Everyone else knows their role. Spinners bowl when they have to. Rahul is a key spinner for us. Sandeep has a lot of experience and he’s come in today and got a wicket in the Powerplay. Rishi coming back and bowling that final over, he put his hand up. It’s still a bit nerve-wracking when you’re bowling at MS Dhoni and there’s not one red-shirt in the crowd, only yellow shirts chanting his name. I think it can be a bit nerve-wracking but he held his nerve and came out on top so huge credit to him.”
Mayank Agarwal: “It doesn’t matter but we’d like to win a few tosses but it’s hard when you have to chase the game from the start. [On what the turning point was] I thought Arsh bowled exceedingly well. I must credit him. Throughout the season, he’s stood up in tough moments and he’s bowled the tough overs. He’s always put his hand up and said, ‘Gimme the ball! So he’s been great for us. Even Rabada was fantastic, to get [Gaikwad] and Rayudu at that time was very crucial.
I can’t really pinpoint, but I would say these two with the ball really changed the game for us. Not just as a captain, but as a team, you need to be really smart and use the longer side of the boundary. You want the opposition to hit as many runs as possible on the longer side because there are more chances of them getting out so that does make a difference. As a batter, you need to pick the balls that you can really get out there because you know if you mishit or even if they middle it, you may get the result you want.”

Player of the Match is… Shikhar Dhawan:
“I always talk about the process. I’m a very process-oriented person and I focus on that a lot, on my fitness, my approach toward the game, and on my skills. So I keep focus on those things and I know the result will take care of itself. I felt the wicket was stopping a bit so I gave myself a bit of time before going for big shots. I kept my calm knowing I could score big runs later on as well. Once I get set, I get lots of boundaries as well.
I know my strength, so that’s what I banked on and it worked my way. Batting first, of course, to put pressure on bowlers and hit boundaries but at the same time to keep wickets in hand. We don’t want to lose too many wickets in a bunch, that was a conscious effort, but at the same time not going into a shell and being aggressive. We keep that nice balance, play with the presence of mind and smartness, not just play with power-hitting but playing with the fields as well.
I’ve become a senior, and I don’t feel like it. Time is flying… I give a lot of input to the players, even to the captain as well, about what my thought process is and what I think about the game. With the youngsters, I try to tell them how to create a good mindset because what happens as a youngster is you are too harsh on themselves. They think a lot, they overthink and when you overthink, your energy goes down. I was trying to communicate that, how to use the law of attraction and think big so you attract big in your life.”
