England had won the toss and their team captain JE Root decided to bat first. England scored 290 runs in 75.4 overs in their first innings. SM Curran was the top runs scorer from England’s first innings. He scored 64 runs and the captain himself was the second best-performed batsmen with 63 runs. The opener of the team RJ Burns scored 43 runs and AU Rashid gave 31 runs contribution in the last of the innings. MDK Perera took four wickets, PM Pushpakumara was the second most wicket-taker with three wickets, A Dananjaya took two and RAS Lakmal dismissed one English batsman.

In reply, Sri Lanka scored 336 runs in 103 overs in their first innings. FDM Karunaratne 63, DM de Silva 59, ARS Silva 85 and A Dananjaya 31. MJ Leach and AU Rashid took three wickets each of them, MM Ali took two wickets and JE Root took one wicket in eight overs with 26 runs. England scored 346 runs in their second innings in 80.4 overs which is about to prove a good score. JE Root (c) smashed 124 runs, BT Foakes † 65 not out, RJ Burns 59 and JC Buttler contributed 34 runs. A Dananjaya took six wickets this time, MDK Perera took three and remaining one wicket was taken by PM Pushpakumara.
